What does an ankle splint do?

Foot and ankle braces and splints treat and recover several conditions and injuries that affect these areas. In more acute injuries, splints can be used as a temporary measure for sprains, dislocations and fractures.

Foot and ankle splints offer support in the following ways:

    • Immobilisation: Splints help with primary healing and pre-surgery protection by immobilising the ankle or foot.

    • Stabilisation: Further injury and discomfort is avoided by stabilising the joint.

    • Injury prevention: Those with previous injuries to the ankle or foot may wear a brace or splint during high-intensity activities to prevent further problems.

    • Pain control: Immobilisation and stabilisation lead to less pain and discomfort, allowing you to heal more comfortably.

What is the difference between an ankle brace and splint?

An ankle brace provides compression and support to the joint to protect and heal it from minor injuries. They are more flexible than splints and allow for some movement to help rehabilitate the ankle. On the other hand, ankle splints are more rigid devices fastened around the ankle to stabilise and immobilise the joint. Ankle splints are commonly used for injuries that benefit from immobilisation but don’t need a cast, like fractures.
