What do I need to start Pilates at home?

Practising Pilates at home doesn’t require much equipment; you only need a flat surface and perhaps a Pilates or yoga mat for comfort. However, there are a variety of small props and accessories you can invest in to enhance your practice, such as bands, toning balls and head balls. These are ideal additions if you’re a little further along in your journey of practising Pilates and are looking for items to make your routines more advanced.

What equipment do I need for yoga?

As with Pilates, you don’t need much equipment to begin practising basic yoga, simply a good quality yoga mat will suffice. Again, there is a selection of different props and aids you can use as support throughout your practice. Items such as yoga belts and blocks are ideal if you’re still working on deepening your flexibility and improving your balance, allowing you to adjust poses to accommodate your range of motion and steady yourself easily. Cushions, bolsters and blankets are also great to have on hand for more meditative-focused flows, providing comfort, warmth and relief during restorative practices. Yoga mat bags are also a handy item to consider, especially if you practise across various locations, as they allow you to carry and store your yoga mat much more comfortably and efficiently.

What is the difference between a gym mat and a yoga mat?

Although they offer similar benefits, there are a few differences between gym mats and yoga mats, the key difference being their thickness. Generally, yoga mats are much thinner, tending to range between ⅛ inch to ¼ inch thick, allowing for much better mobility and stability during yoga poses and flows. Alternatively, gym mats are much thicker, sitting around a ½ inch thick or more and feature extra cushioning designed for more high-impact exercise.
